Scotland wrapped up their Euro 2024 qualification campaign with a lively 3-3 home draw against Norway, concluding the journey on a positive note despite the late equalizer denying them a victory at Hampden on Sunday.
Having already secured qualification for the upcoming European Championship in Germany, Scotland showcased resilience by coming from behind twice in the match. Stuart Armstrong’s goal in the 60th minute seemed poised to secure their sixth victory out of eight Group A games.
However, a late header from Mohamed Elyounoussi in the 86th minute secured a point for third-placed Norway. The result positioned Scotland in second place in the group with 17 points, trailing group winners Spain by four points.
The festive atmosphere before kickoff reflected the celebratory mood, although Norway, despite missing the injured Erling Haaland, proved to be formidable opponents. Aron Donnum’s early strike in the third minute put Norway in the lead, but John McGinn equalized from the penalty spot after 13 minutes, capitalizing on a handball.
Norway regained the lead shortly afterward when Strand Larsen scored, but Scotland managed to level the score before halftime when Leo Ostigard unintentionally turned a Scott McTominay corner into his own goal.
The second half saw opportunities for both teams, resulting in a draw that felt fitting for the competitive match. Scotland’s only loss in the group was away to Spain.
John McGinn commented on the match, stating, “The main thing is we’re going to Germany. There was a lot said about Erling Haaland and Martin Odegaard missing, but we had a lot missing tonight too. Qualifying the last time was incredible. This time has been strange. It’s not like us to qualify early.”
With the conclusion of Group A matches, the points table reveals Scotland’s commendable second-place finish with a total of 17 points, securing their well-deserved spot in the upcoming European Championship in Germany
